Recreating the Big Bang

Here's an idea for a current event report:

This is the big week when the particle accelerator in France/Switzerland went online. And of course, it was preceded by some media-seeking physicists who were trying to scare people into believing that the accelerator could create a blackhole inside the Earth. What's sad to me is that this crackpot science was picked up by so-called responsible media outlets like CNN. There is a short response to this posted on the Reasons To Believe web site.

Thankfully, CNN now has a more responsible piece about the collider available: "First Beam of Protons Fired."

It is going to be very interesting to see what kind of new data are generated by this new technology in the next few years and what kinds of insights it gives us into the first moments of the universe.
