I thought this was a wonderful example of how Christians can make a difference in science. It might make a good topic for discussion or current event with your students.
"The Thinkers: The Bible and history of Israel shape a life," by Mark Roth in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette
A little more background and discussion here and here.
Why does this discovery matter? Because many biblical critics believe the Hebrews did not have a written language until maybe around the time of the Babylonian captivity. This would mean all of the books of the Bible (Genesis through Kings, plus the Wisdom literature and most of the prophets) were written long after the fact and thus, the information in them is largely fabricated. BUT, if the Jews did in fact have a written language by at least the time of David and Solomon, then that opens up a very real possibility that the Bible was written exactly at the time it claims to have been written.
